Cosmetics have provided an arena for chemical experimentation for millennia, and the Renaissance was no different. Only now are we discovering the full range of benefits from Renaissance skincare recipes. Kept secret for centuries, our project uncovers the scientific backing of popular skincare recipes from the Renaissance.
The products made from these recipes undergo scientific evaluation that includes isolation, purification, and chemical and structural analysis of active ingredients. Techniques used include UV-vis spectroscopy, Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography with Mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy.
